Parking Permits - Styles
Parking permits are available as either parking decals or hang tags. Sometimes parking decals are called parking stickers.
Parking decals or parking stickers are typically made of rugged vinyl. Though static cling parking decals have their uses, most parking decal printing is done on vinyl. The style of parking decals can be done in most common shapes like ovals, squares or rectangles. The vinyl itself can be white - or white reflective in your choice of permanent or removable adhesive. Parking decals using permanent adhesive tend to break apart when removed and they leave a sticky residue behind. Removable adhesive offers an adequate sticking power but allows the parking decal to be removed without leaving residue behind.
The overall size of a parking decal is not usually larger than 3" in any dimension. Parking decals can include logos, lot numbers, lot or organization name, numbering and even personalization like a person's name.
Parking permit hang tags are printed on rugged and durable PVC. PVC is an excellent hang tag material because it will not tear or rip like paper or card stock hang tags can. Plastic hang tags also handle sunlight and temperature extremes much more effectively than paper based hang tag materials.
The overall size of parking permit hang tags is not usually taller than 4" or wider than 2 1/2". Hang tags can include logos, lot numbers, lot or organization name, numbering and even personalization like a person's name.
The design of parking permits should be kept simple to enable quick communication of vital parking permit information. Parking permits design should include at least these basic design elements: company or organization name - or logo and the parking permit number.
Printing on white with high contrast colors like darker blues, blacks and darker reds makes reading the parking permits easier than using light colors. If the parking permits use numbering, particularly barcodes, the numbering should be done in black on a white background. Using our online design tool will help you create a parking permit that is easy to read. If you provide your own parking decals or hang tag artwork, be sure to follow the simple guidelines above.
The size of your parking permits should be determined by these factors:
- Do the parking permits need to be easily moved between vehicles?
- To what part of the vehicle will the parking permits be applied? Interior glass? Exterior glass? Bumper?
Once you know the answers, select the standard parking decals or hang tags that best match your needs. Using standard size parking decals will ensure good barcode scan ability and high parking permit visibility.
The vinyl used for parking decals can be printed so that it is stuck to the inside of the glass and read through the glass - or it can be printed so it sticks to the outside of the glass. Window tinting can reduce parking decal visibility when used in the vehicle side windows. Always place parking decals on the lower front windshield for in-vehicle use.
Some applications require that parking decals not be applied to the front windshield. Often safety and visibility reason are stated for this requirement. If this is the case, we suggest that your parking decals be printed for application on the outside of the side windows.
If security of the parking permits is not a concern, consider opting for hang tags. Again, be certain of any visibility concerns before making this choice.
Standard parking permit sizes will work well for most applications. The following sizes comprise over 80% of the parking permits in use today:

Parking Permits - Numbering
Any combination of letters and numbers can be added to parking decals and hang tags. Our online design tool makes quick work of correctly positioning and sizing your parking decal numbering. When adding barcodes to parking decals of hang tags, 3 of 9 or Mod 39 barcodes are the most popular. 3 of 9 is what most barcode scanners read. It is the most popular barcode scanning symbology. We also off the less popular Code 128, Code 2 of 5 and no barcode as asset tags barcode options.
Our barcodes are digitally printed with the highest available black-to-white printing ratios for optimal scanability
