Custom Labels - Laminates and Varnishes
STANDARD LAMINATE AND UV VARNISH are offered in your choice of finishes for select custom labels including: Bottle Labels, Full Color Labels and Packaging Labels, Prime Labels and Product Labels. Laminating and UV varnish provide excellent protection for custom labels from moisture, abrasion and UV exposure.
LAMINATE FINISHES
Hi-Gloss Finish This is a thin protective film applied over the custom labels printing. The protective film provides a gloss or shiny appearance. This laminate is available for most types of face stocks.
Outdoor Gloss Finish This is the best laminate pick for custom labels that will be exposed to direct sunlight. The thin fade-resistant UV-protective film is applied over the custom labels printing to protect custom labels from fading. Also consider UV varnishes for fade resistance due to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. The gloss finish creates a shiny effect. This laminate is available for many face stocks but is not available for paper face stocks.
Matte Finish Matte finish has the same protective characteristics as hi-gloss finish for your custom labels. The finish itself provides a crystal clear – but not glossy – smooth finish. This custom labels laminate is available for most types of face stocks.
UV VARNISH FINISHES
Hi-Gloss UV Varnish Finish This UV varnish is used for four color process custom labels such as prime labels, labels utilizing photos and complex graphics such as certain product labels. UV coating provides a satin-gloss finish to custom labels. This varnish is available for most types of outdoor face stocks.
Matte UV Varnish Finish Matte finish varnish offers the same hi-gloss protection, but with less shine or sheen. This varnish is available for most types of outdoor face stocks.
Clear Overlaminates: (not available on Lexan® substrate material).
Overlaminate is applied after printing to most substrates used for custom labels. Our overlaminates are offered in a variety of finishes and thicknesses and provide the most protection and durability for custom labels. The LexValu™ overlamination process can be used on printed Polyester or Vinyl as an alternative to subsurface printed Lexan® for creating nameplates or control panels. We offer the following overlaminate choices:

LAMINATE FINISHES
When LEXAN® is your custom labels substrate, a special 3M adhesive can be applied to the Lexan® to create peel and stick control panels and nameplates. For custom labels being applied to smooth surfaces, choose the 2 mil option. For rough to very rough surfaces, we suggest the 5mil option. The thickness (2mil or 5mil) of the adhesive does not improve bonding strength to most surfaces. The thickness is selected based on the roughness or texture of the surface your custom labels will be applied to. Thicker (5mil) adhesive simply gets into the grooves better on rough surfaces – it will not stick better than 2mil to smoother application surfaces. When choosing Lexan® as your substrate material, please indicate your adhesive choice below:
- None
- 2 mil - for generally smooth surfaces (3M #467MP)
- 5 mil - for very rough surfaces (3M #468MP)
- 2 mil LSE - for adhering to Low Surface Energy plastics
LABEL UNWIND DIRECTION
This determines the orientation of the label as it comes off the roll.
Between Label Spacing:
Our standard custom labels rolls are 15" with a 1/10" gap between each label. The gap between each label can be set to 1/2" to facilitate cutting the liner and label into individual custom labels. While magnetic materials Lexan®, and PVC are always cut into individual pieces, you have the option in our custom labels quoter to choose to have us cut your custom labels into individual pieces for you.

VARIABLE DATA
Adding serial numbering, barcodes and merging database files for custom labels is considered “variable data printing”. Variable data printing enables your custom labels to be printed with a different serial number, barcode and data from a file. More than one number, barcode or data file can be included on each of your custom labels.
